Seattle Composers' Alliance and Gilda's Club of Seattle presents a concert of new works by SCA composers performed by local high school and middle school ensembles to benefit the important fight against cancer.

The Seattle Composers' Alliance and Gilda's Club has entered a partnership to present a concert of new works performed by local string orchestras to benefit Gilda's Club.

The SCA conceived of the program a year and half ago as an outlet for composers, an opportunity for educational outreach for young musicians and to benefit the important fight against cancer. The SCA is a professional organization and in need of a non-profit partner in order to develop resources to stage an event. It was felt in the beginning that a showcase concert for both the composers and the participating ensembles would be most effective for the non-profit organization.

Gilda's Club became a natural partner through its enthusiasm for the program and its importance to the community. Most everyone has been affected by cancer in some manner and the comfort of those affected and their families is the mission of Gilda's Club; a cause we all can truly identify. "The program took on a whole new dimension," states SCA program manager and board member Geoff Ogle. "When Gilda's Club came on board, the program became a community service as well as educational outreach and an outlet for composers. It is such a worthy cause, the synergy is palpable."

Five area high school and middle school string orchestras have been selected to participate in the program. Five SCA composers were randomly selected from a pool of interested composers. The following assignments were made based on preference and proximity.

  • Steve Ray Allen - Puyallup High School (Todd Giltner, director)
  • Rebecca Wolf-Nail - Roosevelt High School (Anna Edwards, director)
  • William Zeitler Brier - Terrace Middle School (Jennifer Schillen, director)
  • Chris Frahley - Henry Foss High School (Andrea Bryant, director)
  • Linda Sebenius - Inglemoor High School (Jim Rice, director)

It is the mission of the Seattle Composers Alliance is to bring Seattle composers together in a non-competitive atmosphere to share ideas, publicize the organization through concerts, and other events in an effort to promote the SCA and the Seattle composers' community as a whole. If you would like more information about the members of the SCA, please visit our website at www.seattlecomposers.org to see the various projects our members have worked on.

The comfort of patients and their families is the mission of Gilda's Club, a cause we all can truly identify with.
